The Staatsweingut has been a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) since 2003. The VDP grape eagle signals our consistent quality, commitment to the culture of wine, and production of some of the world’s best wines.
Use of the VDP logo is permitted only to growers who have top sites, manage them in harmony with nature, limit yields and allow the wines time to mature. And the VDP submits each member company to a demanding five-yearly inspection to ensure its standards are met.
VDP.GROSSE LAGE – The very best sites
This designation is available only to the finest parcels of land, on which particularly expressive wines are grown. The wines must show the character of the site and be suitable for ageing. Dry wines from VDP.GROSSE LAGE sites are labelled VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. The white wines are made available for sale on 1 September in the year following their harvest, the red wines one year later
These are first-class vineyards with distinctive characteristics. They provide optimal growing conditions, as evidenced over a long period of time. A dry VDP.ERSTE LAGE wine will be labelled ‘Qualitätswein trocken’. It may be made available for sale from 1 May in the year following its harvest.
A VDP.ORTSWEIN is the ambassador for its soil and its village. It will originate in a vineyard known for producing superior-quality wines of character. Along with the vineyard requirement goes the need to limit yields, and the choice of locally typical or (these days) disease-resistant grape varieties. The Staatsweingut produces such wines on the Blankenhornsberg, in the city of Freiburg and the village of Ebringen.
